Site Assessment

Earthmill is 100% focused on turbines for farming and land owners across the North of England.

One of the most important considerations when starting a wind turbine project is choosing the right company to work with, not just for the initial installation phase but throughout the life of the turbine. Our experience in wind turbines allows us to provide a balanced assessment of your site’s topography, wind speed and advice on the most appropriate turbine model selection. Because our offices and engineers are based locally we ensure we offer superior response times and on-going support to our northern customer base throughout the 25+ year life of a turbine.

Site Assessment

Not every site is suitable for a turbine. Too often we see examples of poorly sited turbines which as a result will not perform to the owner’s expectations. There are many factors which need to be considered when assessing a site’s suitability - not all are obvious,  such as:

  • Topography
  • Turbulence
  • Grid connection
  • Planning issues

Wind Speed

Wind speed is the single most important criteria for a turbine. If your site has a poor wind speed, it doesn’t matter how much you spend or which model you buy, you cannot efficiently harvest wind energy.

The relationship between power output and wind speed is complex; roughly speaking every time you double the wind speed you times the power output by 8! Therefore a relatively small increase in wind speed at a site through good siting will result in significantly better energy outputs.

Earthmill uses the National Wind Speed Database as a starting point to calculate your site’s potential, this data is then adjusted once local topography and turbulence has been taken into consideration.
